Laura Brown hosts The Look

Elle Macpherson has hosted the first season of Fashion Star on NBC in the US and two seasons, so far, of Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model on Sky Living. Now another Sydney expat, Laura Brown, is getting a crack at hosting a broadcast fashion show beyond these shores – at least, a mini online version. Here is a preview of The Look, which will debut on the new Hearst/YouTube channel Hello Style tomorrow.

Described as an “interview format episodic”, The Look follows Brown - the Features/Special Projects Director of Harper’s Bazaar US since 2005 - as she embeds herself on both sides of the Atlantic inside the closets, beauty cabinets and cabs of boldface names such as Kim Kardashian, Mad Men's Christina Hendricks and Kiernan Shipka, Twilight's Ashley Greene and fellow Australian Rose Byrne.

Launched in April, Hello Style features weekly shows from five of Hearst’s US titles: also Cosmopolitan, marie claire, Seventeen and Real Beauty and boasts 40,805 subscribers and 4,093,164 video views. So far the biggest hits have come from videos covering plus size fashion and makeup tutorials.

The Look might not be a big gig but nevertheless, it keeps Brown in the spotlight at a time when there are many other fashion reality shows in the pipeline – including an Australian edition of Fashion Star and a new concept, hears frockwriter, about all the Australians working in fashion in New York. No kidding. There's enough of them there - here are a few of the Australians in New York profiles we have run over the past four years. As a founding board member of the Australians in New York Fashion Foundation, moreover, one might assume Brown would have a lot to say about the subject (here is a chat we had with her just prior to the launch of the foundation in 2009).

Besides, The Look is not Brown’s first tv rodeo.

She was a judge on 11 episodes of Bravo’s The Fashion Show alongside model Iman and designer Isaac Mizrahi.

Since joining Harper’s Bazaar US (she is a former features editor of the Australian edition), Brown has owned the magazine’s celebrity round, with her many scoops including the first interview with Janet Jackson following the death of Michael.
