Jethro Cave's Gumby earring is apparently bigger than Costume National

COACD

First spotted dangling off the ear of Australia's next top male model Jethro Cave during a photoshoot for the top model industry blog Confessions of a Casting Director a fortnight ago, Cave's Gumby earring must have appealed to the stylists over at Italian brand Costume National. Because there it was, still on Cave as he walked the show overnight in Milan. Cave is second out in this video below. That said, it's hard to imagine a huge gob of Kelly green rubber being easily adapted to the vision of most luxury brands, so one wonders if there's a chance that Cave simply refused to cooperate? It's not like it went with anything else in the collection. As was observed by the good folk over at The New York Times, who seemed quite perplexed when they noted on Twitter: "An inexplicable Gumby earring hanging off the ear of a model at Costume National". Cave is of course the son of rock legend Nick Cave and has of late become well-connected in the fashion biz. So perhaps noone tells him to lose the Gumby.

I think Jethro was born in the 90's? (he's only 18 i think)

I don't really "get" him as a model- he looks like a pimply kid to me, i'm not sure where the "desirability" i always assume models are suppose to have is....and i don't think that just means models should be traditionally good looking- it means they portray something other's want, whether that be looks, a lifestyle, the "cool" factor etc. His most desirable quality seams to be his breeding- and his father was an innovator of the sneering, moody, arrogant artist thing that Jethro seams to be trying to purport (he apparently got kicked off the Myer shows for his "erratic" behavior)- I have to say on Nick it looked cool, on his son it just looks, hmmm, "done"...

(Or maybe i'm just showing how out of touch with the zeitgeist i am...)

Costume National is also styled by Nicola Formichetti, fashion director at Dazed and Confused and Another Man and previously mentioned your lady gaga post.

To hazard a guess, CN are attempting to bring a younger direction to their often overlooked collection and buy some cool.

I'm with you Patty.. this is the same Jethro after all who was meant to model in the LMFF Independent Runway show this year, but didnt because he turned up about an hour before the show not wearing underwear - well, that was the official story - though I heard it was because he was on...

I love him, he's a rebel!!!

That Gumby earring looks like a stretcher to me, which means if he turned up to the show wearing it, they would have been faced with the choice of having the Gumby earring in the show, or Jethro's ear gushing blood during the show. While both these options lead to weird tweets, only one leads to an enormous dry-cleaning bill.

Patty, you are really the greatest!

I have followed your writing since your contributions at the SMH and am glad the honesty of your reporting continues to reach those who do not fear the realities of our industry.

Thumbs up for you.

It would be hard to imagine any sort of discussion without reporting of this calibre since Oz is a place obsessed with the nothing less than the mediocre.

Vogue.com.au?

pftt....

I've been meaning to respond to this for awhile but have been lazy. But to whomever said it was a stretcher and that it'd be "gushing blood" is somewhat wrong. Though the girth of Gumby (ahaha) would stretch his ear, it doesn't cause the ear to bleed. Our skin is very adaptable and most people can stretch their ears to even extreme sizes like 1 or 2 inches without any blood. That being said, that was purely Jethro being amazing. He could have taken it out if he wanted it to. I'm glad he didn't. :)

So this kids walking down the catwalk with a sort of strange weird green thing in his ear and woah his old man happens to be the Englebert Humperdink of Goth. So what, ive seen plenty of weird shit over the years on the runway. Then they say he's a "rebel" well actually he's just a model, reality check being unprofesional doesn't mean your a rebel, if you don't like your job get another one mate. Yeah he looks kinda cool but when your 6,1 and skinny and dressed in costume national or styled in whatever fashion shit who wouldnt ? no models are rebels looking cool walking down a runway dressed in costume isn't exactly a very fucking hard task.
