BVLGARI's LOLCATS

Leos don’t start celebrating their birthdays until later this month, so what’s with all the lions? After last week’s eight tonne, 40-foot golden lion presiding over the Chanel haute couture show in Paris – closed by Karl Lagerfeld muse Baptiste Giabiconi in a stuffed lion’s head – comes the Fall/Winter 2010/2011 campaign for Italian luxurygoods brand Bulgari. We’ve already seen American actor Julianne Moore nude in Bulgari’s Spring/Summer 2010 campaign, paired with a couple of Australian sulphur-crested cockatoos. For the winter campaign, which was also shot by renowned fashion snapper duo Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott and is due to break in September issues, Moore teams up with a couple of adorable lion cubs. No idea what PETA has to say about it but if the cubs could speak, the expressions on their faces seem to be saying "MEH".

I loved the last campaign and this one is gorgeous too, I'm just wondering how careful they had to be that they didn't scratch her .. as much as I adore cats (big or small) I don't know that getting naked with them is such a great idea! I wish I'd been helping on that shoot though. (Although they do look very young, maybe too young to be away from their mum?)

Hmmm so don't write it in capital letters then. Even still the use of the V instead of a U is not something journalists should concern themselves with - it's just a trademark. Would you only write Coca-Cola in cursive script?

Yes, misspellings are definitely not of journalistic concern. Channel. Armany. Chivenchy. No matter.

Loving the frequency of posts at the moment - and on interesting matters too!

yes, confusing, apologies. for some daft reason i always assumed bvlgari was the actual brand name, just pronounced bulgari. evidently so do a lot of other people because it's all over the net. i note bulgari has a redirect from bvlgari.com to bulgari.com. it was only pointed out to me yesterday by the bulgari rep who sent the shots. i changed the headline of this post to all caps late yesterday because i can't change the URL of this post - at the same time, however, changing the rest of the spellings in the text to bulgari.

i guarantee you that similar confusion also surrounds ruca. what's that? that would be the surf/skate/street brand that a lot of people probably know as RVCA (just acquired by billabong). same thing - they've used the roman u in their trademark.

thanks jess - i love being able to post more regularly. after six months spent working 10-11 hours each day at TT, i'm trying to get back into regular posting mode.

Hi Patty,

You’re right the Bulgari logo, with its signature "V" descends directly from Roman epigraphy, and appeared on the facade of the Bulgari store in Via dei Condotti in the 1930s eventually becoming a fundamental part of the company's identity. By the 1970s it became - anticipating the rest of the jewellery world - an element of design, debuting with immediate success on the first "Bulgari-Bulgari" watch.

Greek immigrant Sotiris Boulgaris (later Italianised to Sotirio Bulgari) founded Bulgari in Rome in the spring of 1884. The majority of the company (about 52.0% of the share capital) is still controlled by the Bulgari family.

What this does remind me of is that utterly adorable Vogue Paris "Pyjama Parties" editorial from November 2007, which starred Sasha Pivovarova and Sheila the albino lion cub. This campaign looks nothing like that editorial, but the lion cubs are every bit as cute, white or not :)

I especially love the grumpy face on the cub resting on Julianne's leg in the second photograph. It's a bit "ok, mummy, can we finish this boring photo session and then play Fetch?"

I suspect all the lions popping up these days has something to do with the fact that they're threatened with extinction: farmers in Africa are poisoning and killing them at alarming rates with an over-the-counter pesticide they call "the blue stuff."

And Fourth Daughter: I'm sure they've either declawed these cats or put covers over the animals' claws to keep Miss Moore from being injured. After all, they're being raised for captivity; they don't need their claws anymore.

I think Moore looks hot. As for PETA concerns, screw those psycho lesbians. I read a story about PETA that really gets to the point. Check it out: http://www.animalshateus.com/2009/12/04/screw-peta-wed-rather-be-warm-alive/
