Did someone give Cameron Diaz The Pip?

chris pizzello/AP via daylife

Antipodian stylewatchers may have done a double-take after spotting Cameron Diaz’s latest coiffure at last night’s Golden Globes awards in Los Angeles. Although a little hard to call from a distance, on closer inspection the style is starkly reminiscent of the trademark tresses of our own aspiring style icon Pip Edwards. The Sydney-based hipster, fashion designer and partner (reportedly estranged) of ksubi’s Dan Single has become so well-known for her two-tone do – which a commenter on Oz beauty site primped.com.au uncharitably sniffed made her look like a Top Deck chocolate - women have not only been beating a path to the door of its alleged creator, Australian hair maestro Brad Ngata, "The Pip" merited a full page Brad Ngata "Vogue Promotion" in the December issue of Australian Vogue.

The freehand French technique of balayage, via which stylists hand-paint colour onto hair, has become extremely popular, with celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker (and it follows, consumers) sporting variations.

But Ngata claims to have pushed the look to unprecedented skunk-like extremes - and his pioneering efforts have not apparently escaped the scrutiny of the Olsen twins. Who would, like, know.

As Edwards told Vogue (as recounted by the SMH):

"A group of us were at the Beatrice Inn in New York in July when I ran into Mary-Kate [Olsen] … She said: 'Oh my God. How amazing is your hair?' We spent a good half-hour talking about our hair … I've always admired Mary-Kate's style, so I was so flattered when the conversation ended with her saying: 'This time you beat me."'

“Yeah that’s The Pip” noted Ngata of Diaz's do, when frockwriter bailed him up this afternoon for an ID.

“We kind of developed it with her [Edwards] over time, to come up with the colours. What we did differently was we accentuated/tinted the regrowth and we kept lightening her mid-lengths to ends".

He added, “Balayage has been around for a long time. We’ve pushed it a little bit more with Pip, whereas Sarah Jessica Parker had a more commercial look. With Pip, we made it a little more precise. We used foils and we introduced the regrowth as well. It just makes it a little more accurate with foiling - how the colour fades from a deep dark colour down to the blonde on one mesh of hair is quite important. It's more strategic with foil”.

The Pip will set you back approximately A$220 a pop and Ngata reports that he is doing two-three Pips a week at his two Sydney salons.

“It’s a major trend” noted Ngata. “You only have to go to [Sydney nightspot] The Ivy on a Friday or Saturday night and you’ll see six or seven Pips running around. I couldn’t work out how she could possibly be getting around so quickly at one point”.

I'm going to call out the 'pip' as a retro-grunge look. I had my hair done in a similar way by a stylist at Togninis (yes, in Brisbane), in the early to mid nineties.

It's likely that SJP's look began as a refined version of the more full-on grunge version (going from what i have observed, and that most trends begin more extremely and are then softened to be commercial, not the other way round). But hey, if someone's laid claim to it now, I guess it goes to them.

Regardless, Diaz's hair looks good.

Instead of name dropping, colouring her hair, partying in Bondi, allowing 100's of photographs of her little boy to be posted on thecobrasnake.com. Pip should try putting some sun tan lotion and a sun hat on her son and take him to the park instead of making him tan on an electric sunbed. Focus on what's best for your baby for a change and not what famous person you can buddy up to and be photographed with. This 'Pip' and that Ksubi crew are something else but it's all coming tumbling down now. Not so cool after all.....

Please DO NOT! compare Cameron Diaz to that Pip Edwards! It is a great insult Daiz's intelligence even though it's about a hair-do. Diaz is a great actress and Pip..well what does she do apart from becoming part of the ksubi gang and breeding out Dan Single's child ?( Don't think they are broken up seen them holding hands and hugging each other just 2 weeks ago)
That over the top article in Vogue was a paid Advertisment by Brad
Ngata,in it Pip was called an A-list Celebrity, makes me sick she is like a poor man's Kim kardashian. What exactly does she do?!
Cameron Diaz have been sporting that hair do for nearly over 2 years now.

Pip, dunno why you need vanity plates on the Beamer when your hair is now name-checking for you...

*barf*, this exactly the kind of self-serving Sydney bull shite, that has me clutching my duffle bag and booking a one way tix back to Melbourne. I'll stop at that before I get myself into trouble.

" the pip"?
no way.
Lou Doillon has been sporting a much less skanky version of that 'do for at least five years.

No comment on Pip herself, but i really do hate her hair.

I like the Pip on mousy blondes like Diaz, SJP and co, it looks like the sun has bleached out their hair a bit - which is the intent with this style non? On the actual Pip however... well given what anonymous said above, and given that anonymous isn't alone, I think making yourself look less messy, not more, might be advisable for your long term public image.

Patty if you noticed the full page Ngata and the "Pip" "article" was a full page "advertorial". Either way these people, need to realise that their time is coming to an end. It's kinda fun to watch.

Patty Huntington said...

yes quite right, it was an advertorial, dubbed a "vogue promotion". tks. i have adjusted the copy. that means ngata made even more of a deal out of the edwards connection to the look.

sorry for the lack of comment movement this morning. mysterious power outage in kings cross for over an hour, which then disabled my wifi. mercury is in retrograde as they say...

i don't think many people will be running out to copy that any time soon. Her hair looks awful!

The Pip? oh please don't feed her ego.

Brad Ngata himself looks like a freaky tan version of Michael Jackson and as for Pip Edwards...what a Pipstick she is! I hate her hair,it just looks dry and over worked where as Cameron Diaz is more soft looking and the colour naturally fades into each other.

Self promoting paid articles are embarassing!

Where is your baby?

gosh I think they both look like they can't be bothered getting their roots done. Can't imagine why anyone would pay to have that done to their hair.

As an aside, Patty, does it frustrate you that newspaper reporters keep ripping off your stories?
First Sydney Confidential mentioned "The Pip", and now Andrew Horney in the Saturday SMH has re-done your "models behaving badly" story.

Pip's hair is rad!
At least she's having a bit of fun with it!

Pip Edwards is great, I love her style and I think she pulls it off quiet well as for everyone saying this hairstyle belongs to others well even if it does it hasn't been noticed that much until pip started wearing it !
