Land of the long white cloud's silver lining: Alexandra Owen

Having seen two thoroughly uninspiring collections in a row this afternoon (and I’m sure I saw another airbrushed animal T over at Twenty Seven Names), Alexandra Owen proved a breath of fresh air.

For her sophomore NZFW season, the Wellington-based designer sent out a collection of sculptural, trapeze-line coats and delicately-draped dresses.

Inspired by Marie Antoinette, there were hints of crinolines in the ebullient tulle cocktail skirts, worn under blousons boasting softly-ruffled collars - but a definite nod to the noughties with Latex-look leggings which could have been mistaken for sass & bide's near ubiquitous Black Rats.

Sass & Bide showed the Black Rats as part of their Fall 08 collection in New York Feb 2008 - 5 months later.

Just sayin.

and i could think of a plethora of international brands which showed latex-look leggings in february 2007 for the FW0708 season, including hussein chalayan.

sass & bide didn't invent the look. but they certainly put their imprimatur on it.
